ALMA SAC
ALMA SCIENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ASAC), SUMMARY AND QUICK-LINKS
This webpage provides a quick summary of the activities of the ALMA Science Advisory Committee (ASAC) and to provide links to the reports and websites most useful for the Chilean ALMA community. It is written/maintained by N. Nagar (last update: January 2009).
ASAC: Charges
- Provide advice on those major issues presented to the ASAC by the Project Scientist or the ALMA Board that affect the science capabilities of ALMA and require decisions to be made or priorities to be set regarding project tasks and resources
- Respond to specific charges from the ALMA Board
- Ensure the ALMA community is kept informed of developments in ALMA science and science capabilities
ASAC: Membership and Meetings
The ASAC is composed of up to 5 members appointed by each of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and ESO, up to three members appointed by East Asia, and one member appointed by Chile. The ALMA Project Scientist (Richard Hills) is an ex-officio member of the ASAC. The current list of ASAC members can be found here. The current Chilean member of the ASAC is Neil Nagar (January 2008 - present).
The ASAC meets face-to-face twice a year. In 2008, meetings were held in Santiago (February) and Charlottesville (September). In 2009, meetings were held in San Pedro de Atacama (January) and TBD. Teleconferences are held approximately once every two months.
Before each face-to-face meeting the ASAC receives specific charges from the ALMA Board. At the end of each meeting the ASAC responds with a report to the Board; these reports to the ALMA Board are made public (barring any confidential items) after the report is accepted by the Board. Previous ASAC reports can be found here.
ALMA MILESTONES AND CALL FOR "EARLY SCIENCE" PROPOSALS
The ALMA schedule was redrawn in October 2008. The most crucial dates from the point of view of the ALMA user are outlined here.
The first call for "Early Science" Proposals will be made 8 months before the estimated start of "Early Science". Currently, this call for proposals is estimated to be made in the first quarter of 2011. The deadline for submission will be two months after the call for proposals, leaving six months for the process of proposal selection and observing preparation.
"Early Science" is estimated to start around the third quarter of 2011. At this point, ALMA is expected to have the following characteristics:
- At least 16 antennas fully commissioned
- Bands 3,6,7,9, i.e. 84-116GHz, 211-275GHz, 275-373GHz, 602-720GHz
- Bands 5 and 8, i.e. 125-169 GHz and 385-500GHz, on some antennas
- Shortest spacings to baselines of >=1km
- Basic set of spectral modes (high-resolution to 8GHz)
- Linear and circular polarization of compact sources
- Single dish: compact and extended sources (in continuum and spectral line), on-the-fly mapping
- Synthesis mapping: single fields + pointed mosaics
- Calibration comparable to existing mm arrays
- Software and support for user applications, observing, and data processing. Note that the ALMA "pipeline" will not be available during Early Science.
ALMA Development Plan
ALMA has a dedicated annual budget to support the ALMA Development Plan. The purpose of the Development Plan is to maintain ALMA's cutting edge capability out to 2030. The ALMA Development Working Group (Chair: Andrew Blain) has drawn up a preliminary report for the ALMA board. This report contains scientific drivers from varios fields and their technical requirements, eg. more antennas, a more powerful correlator, wider frequency coverage. The report is expected to be public after acception by the ALMA Board. The ranking and budgeting of these technical requirements will be discussed by the Development Working Group and ASAC during 2009. Feedback from the community is welcomed; several ALMA related conferences have included a discussion session on the ALMA Development Plan.
